Kalimantan (Borneo) Options

ORANGUTANS SAMBOJA OPTION #1

Day 1 Upon arrival at the Balikapapan airport you'll be met and transferred to Samboja Lodge. In the late afternoon you'll have an opportunity to observe the orangutans around the lodge.

Day 2 This morning you'll do some soft trekking and will plant fruit trees, which will eventually supply food to the orangutans. You'll then observe the orangutans and sun bears around the lodge. This survival foundation is a rehabilitation center. In the afternoon you'll drive to Bukit Bangkiray for rainforest jungle trekking and the Canopy Bridge. Time permitting you'll return via canoe, through an area where you may see proboscis monkeys.

Day 3 Early morning trekking around the lodge, before transferring to the airport.

ORANGUTANS SAMBOJA OPTION #2

Day 1 Upon arrival at the Balikapapan airport you'll be met and transferred to Samboja Lodge. In the late afternoon you'll have an opportunity to observe the orangutans around the lodge.

Day 2 This morning you'll do some soft trekking and will plant fruit trees, which will eventually supply food to the orangutans. You'll then observe the orangutans and sun bears around the lodge. Overnight at a simple camp in the rainforest, or return to Balikpapan for your overnight stay.

Day 4 Transfer to the airport.

ORANGUTANS SAMBOJA OPTION #3

MAHAKAM RIVER & ORANGUTAN ADVENTURE

Day 1 Upon arrival at Balikpapan airport you'll be met and transferred to Loa Janan where you'll board your houseboat.

Day 2 This morning you'll arrive at Muara Muntai village where you'll observe local life. Continue by motorized canoe, across Jempang Lake, to the homeland of the Dayak Benuaq tribe. A welcome ceremony will be held by the chief of the Dayak, followed by traditional dances. At the village you'll see the longhouses and totem poles of the Dayak. Return to Muara Muntai where you'll see monkeys, birds and snakes along the Ohong River. Continue, on your houseboat, to Tenggarong.

Day 3 On arrival in Tenggarong you'll visit the local market, royal cemetery and Sultan's Kutai Kertanegara collection. Continue downstream to Samboja Lodge where you'll visit the orangutan rehabilitation center. Observe orangutans and sun bears.

Day 4 Early morning trekking around the lodge, before transferring to the airport.

ORANGUTANS RIMBA LODGE

Day 1 Upon arrival at the Pangkalanbun airport you'll be met and transferred to Kumai, where you'll board the boat that will take you to Rimba Lodge. In the late afternoon you'll have an opportunity to explore the area around the lodge, looking for proboscis monkeys.

Day 2 This morning you'll travel upstream to Camp Leaky where you'll go hiking to reach areas rich with wildlife. In the mid-afternoon you'll observe the orangutan feeding program before returning, via river, to the Lodge.

Day 3 This morning you'll boat upstream to the second station, Pondok Tanggui, where the babies and juvenile orangutans feed. Continue to Pasalat to see the reforestation project. Hike in the jungle before traveling by boat to Tanjung Harapan village to see the Malayan and Semi Dayak settlements at the National Park. Return to Rimba Lodge in the late afternoon.

Day 4 Transfer to the Pangkalanbun airport.

DAYAK TRIBE & MAHAKAM RIVER ADVENTURE

Day 1 Transfer from the Balikpapan airport to Loa Janan where you'll board the houseboat that will take you up the Mahakam River to Kutai country.

Day 2 This morning you'll arrive at Muara Muntai village where you'll observe local life. Continue by motorized canoe across Jempang Lake, to the homeland of the Dayak Benuaq tribe. A welcome ceremony will be held by the chief of the Dayak, followed by traditional dances. At the village you'll see the longhouses and totem poles of the Dayak. Return to Muara Muntai where you'll look for monkeys, birds and snakes along the Ohong River. Continue, on your houseboat, to Melak.

Day 3 Upon arrival this morning in Melak you'll visit the local market and will then drive to Eheng village to see the longhouse of the Dayak Tanjung Benuaq people. One big longhouse is home to more than 100 people. Villagers still make traditional handicrafts such as rattan baskets and statues. Return to your houseboat and travel on a small river to visit the Gemuruh. In the late afternoon cruise downriver towards Tenggarong.

Day 4 Arrive at Tenggarong and visit the Mulawarman Museum to see the Sultan's Kutai Kertanegara collections. This is the oldest kingdom in Indonesia. Return to Balikpapapn and transfer to the airport.

RIKO RIVER & ORANGUTAN ADVENTURE

Day 1 Upon arrival at Balikpapan airport you'll be met and transferred to the Kampung Baru Jetty where you'll board the speedboat that will take you along Balikpapan Bay to Kemantis. After viewing the mangrove forest continue to the Wain River where you'll see monkeys along the riverbank. With luck you may also see fresh water dolphins. You'll then drive to Bukit Bangkirai for an overnight stay.

Day 2 Early this morning venture up the jungle trail to observe the wild animals and huges trees of the rain forest. Stop at the Canopy Bridge, 30 meters above the ground. The Bridge is connected to five Bangkirai trees and is a wonderful observation point.

Day 3 This morning visit the Museum Mulawarman, formerly the Kingdom of Kutai Kertanegara. You'll see the Sultan's collection and Chinese ceramics from the 16th century. Drive to Pampang to visit the Dayak Kenyah village where you'll see a typical Dayak longhouse. Stop at Kebun Raya Samarinda where you might see honey bears, gibbons, pythons and orangutans. You'll then travel, via small boat, across the Mahakam River to Kampung Bagis to see traditional Sarung weaving. Return to Balikpapan.

Day 4 Transfer to the airport.


Sulawesi - Mysterious Toraja
Sulawesi is easily combined with a side trip to Manado for diving

FIVE DAY/FOUR NIGHT OPTION #1

Day 1 Upon arrival at Makassar you'll be met and taken on a city tour of Fort Rotterdam, Bugis sailboat harbor and Losari Beach. Overnight in Makassar.

Day 2 Depart for Tana Toraja via the west coast to Pare-Pare. Travel via the beautifully scenic mountains with a stop at Bambapuang, before arriving at Toraja.

Day 3 Today's full day Tana Toraja excursion includes the cliff graves at Lemo, the ancient graves at Londa, Ke'te Kesu traditional village, famous for its woodcarvings and the market at Rantepao.

Day 4 Today's full day excursion takes you to Pallawa to see the "Tongkonan" Toraja houses. Continue to Batutumonga for a spectacular view of Rantepao valley. You'll then take a soft trek to traditional villages with their coffee, vanilla and clove plantations.

Day 5 Return to Makassar, via Pare-Pare. Transfer to the airport.

FIVE DAY/FOUR NIGHT OPTION #2

Day 1 Upon arrival at Makassar you'll be met and taken on a city tour of Ujung Pandang and Fort Rotterdam, Bugis sailboat harbor and Losari Beach. You'll then drive to Sengkang via Bugis village. Overnight in Sengkang.

Day 2 Depart for Tana Toraja with stops at Lake Tempe, where you'll see traditional fishermen, and Palopo.

Day 3 Today's full day Tana Toraja excursion includes the cliff graves at Lemo, the ancient graves at Londa, Ke'te Kesu traditional village, famous for its woodcarvings and the market at Rantepao.

Day 4 Today's full day excursion takes you to Pallawa to see the "Tongkonan" Toraja houses. Continue to Batutumonga for a spectacular view of Rantepao valley. You'll then take a soft trek to traditional villages with their coffee, vanilla and clove plantations.

Day 5 Return to Makassar, via Pare-Pare. Transfer to the airport.

SIX DAY/FIVE NIGHT OPTION

Day 1 Upon arrival at Makassar you'll be met and transferred to Bira beach, at the southeastern part of the peninsula. Along the way you'll stop to visit Tana Beru, the center of south Sulawesi's boat-building industry. Upon arrival at your hotel you'll have time to swim and enjoy the white sand beach.

Day 2 Depart for Sengkang via Sinjai and Camming with a stop to view the slopes of the extinct Mt. Lompobattang volcano. This afternoon you'll take a boat ride on Lake Tempe, to see the floating fishing village. Overnight at Sengkang.

Day 3 Depart for Tana Toraja. Stops along the way include a silk-weaving village, the fishing port at Bay of Bone and Nenggala, a traditional village with its 14 rice barns in front of the two Toraja houses that are the former home of King Nenggala. Arrive at Toraja in the late afternoon.

Day 4 Today's full day Tana Toraja excursion includes the cliff graves at Lemo, the ancient graves at Londa, Ke'te Kesu traditional village, famous for its woodcarvings and the market at Rantepao.

Komodo - Home of the Dragons
Komodo is easily combined with Flores

FOUR DAY/THREE NIGHT OPTION

Day 1 Upon arrival in Bima you'll be met and taken on a tour of Wawo village, a typical compound of rice granaries, hand-weaving and the Bima Museum.

Day 2 Transfer to the Sape harbor and set sail for Komodo. The boat trip takes about seven to eight hours. Overnight accommodations will be at the Ranger House in Komodo or on board the boat.

Day 3 Today's adventure begins with soft trekking to look for a variety of animals, including the famous Komodo dragon. Following your trek you'll have time to enjoy the white sand beach and underwater coral gardens below boarding the boat for your return trip to Sape.

Day 4 Transfer to the Bima airport.

THREE DAY/TWO NIGHT OPTION

Day 1 Upon arrival in Bima you'll transfer directly to Sape harbor where you'll board the boat for your seven to eight hour trip to Komodo.

Day 2 Today's adventure begins with soft trekking to look for a variety of animals, including the famous Komodo dragon. Following your trek you'll have time to enjoy the white sand beach and underwater coral gardens below boarding the boat for your return trip to Sape.

Day 3 Transfer to the Bima airport.



Flores - Colored Lakes of Kelimutu
Flores is easily combined with Komodo

Day 1 Upon arrival in Maumere, Flores you'll be met and transferred to your hotel in Moni. Stops along the way include a church that's home to a black Madonna.

Day 2 Early this morning you'll depart for Kelimutu. A 1.5 kilometer walk takes to the a viewing spot overlooking the three colored lakes. The waters of Kelimutu's lakes have changed colors over the years. Currently one is blue, one is silver and one is black. This afternoon you'll return to Maumere for a stay at a beach hotel.

Day 3 This morning you'll tour the city of Maumere to observe daily life. You'll visit the local market and a fishing village. This afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the beach.

Day 4 Transfer to the airport.



Sumatra - Land of Legend

BOHOROK ORANGUTANS OPTION #1

Day 1 Transfer from Medan airport to Bohorok River. Along the way you'll stop at rubber and oil plantations.

Day 2 This morning you'll visit the Bukit Lawang Orangutan rehabilitation station. Start by walking along the riverbank, cross by small canoe and hike up the hill, through the rainforest, to the feeding site. Return to the Medan airport in the late afternoon.

BOHOROK ORANGUTANS OPTION #2

Day 1 Transfer from Medan airport to Bohorok River. Along the way you'll stop at rubber and oil plantations. Upon arrival you'll walk along the riverbank, cross by small canoe and hike up the hill, through the rainforest, to the orangutan rehabilitation feeding site.

Day 2 Accompanied by a ranger, you'll go hiking and wildlife viewing in the tropical rainforest around the station. With luck you may observe orangutans, leaf monkeys, macaques, gibbons, siamang and a variety of exotic birds.

Day 3 This morning you can do some soft trekking at the station before returning to the Medan airport.

BOHOROK ORANGUTANS OPTION #3

Day 1 Transfer from Medan airport to Bohorok River. Along the way you'll stop at rubber and oil plantations. Upon arrival you'll walk along the riverbank, cross by small canoe and hike up the hill, through the rainforest, to the orangutan rehabilitation feeding site.

Day 2 Accompanied by a ranger, you'll go hiking and wildlife viewing in the tropical rainforest around the station. With luck you may observe orangutans, leaf monkeys, macaques, gibbons, siamang and a variety of exotic birds.

Day 3 Continue trekking in the Bohorok area. You also have the option of returning to the orangutan feeding site. Or, just relax near the shores of the river and observe village life and local children inner tubing on the river.

Day 4 This morning you can do some soft trekking at the station, before returning to the Medan airport.

BOHOROK ORANGUTANS + LAKE TOBA OPTION
This itinerary can easily be reversed, visiting Lake Toba first

Day 1 Transfer from Medan airport to Bohorok River. Along the way you'll stop at rubber and oil plantations.

Day 2 This morning you'll visit the Bukit Lawang Orangutan rehabilitation station. Start by walking along the riverbank, cross by small canoe and hike up the hill, through the rainforest, to the feeding site. In the afternoon travel to Brastagi, a highland resort with cooler weather and mountain scenery. On arrival you'll visit Peceran, a village with traditional houses. You'll also visit the Brastagi fruit market.

Day 3 Depart for Parapat, a lake resort on the shores of Lake Toba. You'll see the slender Sipiso-piso Waterfall, the ancient King's Palace of Simalungun at Pematang Purba and the vegetable and fruit farms and pine forest of Lake Toba. You'll then travel by boat to Samosir, an island in the middle of the lake. Upon arrival you'll visit the Tomb of King Sidabutar and Batak Toba village at Tomok. Continue to Ambarita, a traditional village with ancient megalithic furniture in front of the traditional houses. Overnight on the island.

Day 4 Return to Parapat by boat and drive through the towns of Pematang Siantar and Tebing Tinggi, past rubber, oil, cacoa plantations and rice terraces to Medan. Time permitting, you'll have a tour of the city before returning to the airport.

LAKE TOBA OPTION #1

Day 1 Transfer from Medan airport to Lake Toba, traveling past rubber, oil, cacoa plantations and rice terraces. Arrive in Parapet for an overnight stay on the shores of Lake Toba.

Day 2 Travel by boat to Samosir, an island in the middle of the lake. Upon arrival you'll visit the Tomb of King Sidabutar and Batak Toba village at Tomok. Continue to Ambarita, a traditional village with ancient megalithic furniture in front of the traditional houses. Visit the village of Simanindo to see a performance of folk dances, performed by the Batak Toba people.

Day 3 Travel to Brastagi via the Ring Road of Lake Toba. You'll see the slender Sipiso-piso Waterfall, the ancient King's Palace of Simalungun at Pematang Purba and the vegetable and fruit farms and pine forest. During your stay in Brastagi you'll visit the local fruit market and the traditional Batak Karo village of Pecaran.

Day 4 Return to Medan following a drive through part of the lush Sumatran rainforest. Time permitting you'll take a city tour before transferring to the airport.

LAKE TOBA OPTION #2

Day 1 Transfer from Medan airport to Lake Toba, traveling past rubber, oil, cacoa plantations and rice terraces. Arrive in Parapet for an overnight stay on the shores of Lake Toba.

Day 2 Travel by boat to Samosir, an island in the middle of the lake. Upon arrival you'll visit the Tomb of King Sidabutar and Batak Toba village at Tomok. Continue to Ambarita, a traditional village with ancient megalithic furniture in front of the traditional houses. Visit the village of Simanindo to see a performance of folk dances, performed by the Batak Toba people.

Day 3 Return to Medan airport.


Lombok Options
Dive extensions to the Gili Islands are easily combined with Lombok

Lombok Quick Trip

Day 1 Upon arrival at the Lombok airport you'll be met and taken on a half day city tour including 18th century structures: Royal Floating Palace, Pura Meru Temple, Summer Palace of King Anak Agung Gede Ngurah and Lingsar Temple, the oldest temple in Lombok. Built in 1714, Lingsar is used by both Hindus and Muslims. You'll also visit Bertais Market.

Day 2 Today's full day excursion starts with a stop at Lendang Bajur market. You'll then travel through the mountainous interior of the island through Pusuk Pass, where monkeys play along the side of the road. Arrive at Bangsal Harbor where you'll board the boat that will take you to Gili Air. This flat island is fringed with dazzling white sand beaches and coral reefs, with the volanoes of Lombok in the background. Spend the day sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling or diving, before returning to Lombok in the late afternoon.

Day 3 Transfer to the Lombok airport or pier.

Lombok in Depth

Day 2 Today's full day excursion takes you to the three Gili Islands. Begin with a boat crossing to Gili Trawangan, known for its fabulous snorkeling. Continue to the blue coral island Gili Meno. The last stop is Gili Air with its excellent snorkeling and an interesting fishing settlement. Return to Lombok in the late afternoon.

Day 3 Today's countryside tour takes you to villages known for bamboo furniture-making and Karang Bayan and Nyiur Baya, villages known for unusual artifacts made from "mountain weed." You'll also visit the preserved forest at Suranadi, located deep in the interior of the island.

Day 4 Today's excursion takes you to northern Lombok. Pass through mountainous rain forests and stop at Pusuk Monkey Forest. Continue to Sendang Gile Waterfall and Senaru village. Descend to the valley where you'll visit the sacred grave of King Selaparang and the grave of Maha Patih Gajah Mada, a unifying hero of the archipelago. The last stop of the day is at Lemor, a forest reserve

Day 5 Today's Sasak Traditional Village tour includes Banyumulek, one of the many pottery villages in Lombok, Sukarara village, where traditional Songket cloth is handwoven with gold and silver thread, Rambitan, a typical Sasak village where the houses and storage buildings are still constructed with wood, bamboo and thatched roofing. Continue to Kuta Beach and Tanjung Ann on the southern coast of Lombok. You'll have time to swim, surf or windsurf before returning to your hotel.

Day 6 Transfer to the Lombok airport or pier.

Mt. Rinjani Volcano Climb & Camping

Day 1 Early this morning depart for Mt. Rinjani. You'll drive through a mountainous area with villages and rice fields to *Senaru village. From there you'll begin your trek through the jungle to Base Camp III. Lunch is en route. Dinner is at the Camp.

Day 2 After breakfast you'll begin your trek up to Pelawangan, which is 3,000 meters above sea level. From Pelawangan you'll have a spectacular view overlooking Lombok. Continue down to Segara Anak Lake, with its volcano in the middle. Relax by the lake or bathe in the hot springs waters. Lunch, dinner and overnight camping will be by the lake.

Day 3 After breakfast you'll walk back up to Pelawangan and then back down to Senaru village. From there you'll be transferred to your choice of hotel or to the Lombok airport.

Java Options

Overland to Bali
Overland to Bali is easily combined with Baluran National Park

Day 1 Upon arrival at the Yogyakarta airport you'll be met and transferred to your hotel, following a tour of the Sultan's Palace, a traditional batik home-industry center and the Water Castle.

Day 2 Very early this morning you'll travel to Borobudur where you'll arrive in time to see the sunrise. Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple in the world. You'll have time to tour the site before continuing to Prambanan temple.

Day 3 This morning you'll travel overland to Mt. Bromo, with a stop at Trowulan. At Mt. Bromo you have the option of taking an overnight trek to the top of the volcano, traveling part of the way by jeep and part of the way by donkey. Arrive at the summit in time to see the sunrise.

Day 3 After coming down from Mt. Bromo you'll travel to Kalibaru for an overnight stay.

Day 4 Travel from Kalibaru to the east Java harbor where you'll board the ferry to Bali. Upon arrival you'll be met and transferred to your Bali hotel.

Yogyakarta - Quick Trip

Day 1 Upon arrival at the Yogyakarta airport you'll be met and transferred to your hotel following a tour of the Sultan's Palace, a traditional batik home-industry center and the Water Castle.

Day 2 Very early this morning you'll travel to Borobudur where you'll arrive in time to see the sunrise. Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple in the world. You'll have time to tour the site before continuing to Prambanan temple. Transfer to the airport in the late afternoon.

Yogyakarta - Gem of Java in Depth

Day 1 Upon arrival at the Yogyakarta airport you'll be met and transferred to your hotel.

Day 2 Very early this morning you'll travel to Borobudur where you'll arrive in time to see the sunrise. Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple in the world. You'll have time to tour the site before returning to your hotel. This afternoon's Yogyakarta city tour includes the Sultan's Palace, the bird market at Ngasem, Water Castle, a traditional batik home-industry center and Kotagede, the original silverworks center of Yogyakarta.

Day 3 Today you'll visit Prambanan, the Hindu temple at Sambisari. Continue to Kalasan, Sari and Plaosan temples. From Banyunibo temple you'll be able to see the ruined palace of Ratu Boko. This evening you'll attend a Indonesia buffet dinner and Ramayana Ballet performance.

Day 4 Today you'll depart your hotel in the very early morning to drive to Kaliurang Highland resort. From there you'll take a several hour walk in the rain forest, through valleys and river gorges to Mt. Merapi volcano. You'll have an opportunity to see a variety of tropical plants and birds, as well as giant spiders. See traditional villages and eat breakfast in a small bamboo hut near the riverbank in one of the villages. Return to your hotel in the mid-morning. After a short rest, you'll visit several Javanese villages including Timbulhardjo where traditional herbal medicines are produced and where traditional hat-making is still practiced. Continue to the market at Tien and wander through other villages to Kasongan, the center of pottery-making. Continue to Gendeng village and Pajangan village where you'll observe a mask-maker at work.

Day 5 Today's excursion takes you a distance from Yogyakarta to the Dieng Plateau. You'll drive through an area of dramatic scenery, passing tea and tobacco plantations of the Sindoro-Sumbing valley. You'll visit Java's oldest Hindu temples, dating from the 9th century. You'll then see the active volcanic craters of the Plateau and take in the beauty of the Warna (colored) and Pengilon (mirror) lakes.

Day 6 Transfer to the Yogyakarta airport OR extend your trip by one day with a visit to Yogyakarta's sister city of Solo. The Solo City excursion includes the 14th century Sukuh Temple, the 14th century mountain temple at Cetho and Sangiran, where fossilized remains of Java Man were found. You'll visit the museum with its display of fossilized Stegdon tusks and teeth, as well as the excavation site. Transfer to the Solo airport or return to Yogyakarta.

East Java - Baluran National Park
Baluran
National Park is easily combined with Overland to Bali

OPTION #1 - Overnight

Day 1 Transfer from anywhere in Bali to Gilimanuk Harbor for the ferry from Bali to Java. Arrive 30 to 60 minutes later at Ketapang Harbor. After registering at the National Park office, you'll visit the Park to look for a variety of animals. The best time to see wildlife this afternoon will be from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. Overnight in a very basic, rustic accommodation at the Park, or opt to stay at a small hotel about 40 minutes from the Park.

Day 2 This morning is the optimum time to see birds and other animals. There's a possibility of seeing deer, peacocks, monkeys, black monkeys and numerous small birds. You'll visit an observation site in the Park, with a panoramic view over the savannah, before returning to Ketapang Harbor for the crossing back to Bali.

OPTION #2 - Day trip

Day 1 Transfer from Pemuteran in northern Bali to Gilimanuk Harbor for the ferry from Bali to Java. Arrive 30 to 60 minutes later at Ketapang Harbor. After registering at the National Park office, you'll visit the Park to look for a variety of animals. From 7:00am to 9:00am or 4:00pm to 6:00pm are the optimum times to see birds and other animals. There's a possibility of seeing deer, peacocks, monkeys, black monkeys and numerous small birds. You'll visit an observation site in the Park, with a panoramic view over the savannah, before returning to Ketapang Harbor for the crossing back to Bali.
