Most people who come to Central Java to see Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist temple complex, opt to stay in the bustling town of Yogyakarta, which is about 30 to 45 minutes from Borobudur. If you plan to visit Borobudur at sunrise, or if you simply prefer to stay in the countryside with its rich, tropical vegetation and small villages, there are three very different hotel options within minutes of Borobudur temple.

Amanjiwo is, beyond doubt, one of the most spectacular properties anywhere. It is architecturally fantastic, with a design based on Borobudur itself. This is one of those properties that's a challenge to describe. Suffice to say that it's fabulous and has to be seen to be appreciated.

Beyond the rice fields, which Amanjiwo purchased so as to ensure that they're never developed, the view of Borobudur is surreal. The suites at Amanjiwo are beautifully appointed. The service is excellent and the food is delicious. Dining at Amanjiwo is a very special experience, especially after dark when the architecture, stunning lighting and quiet local background music set a mood that's other-worldly.

Amanjiwo has a gallery that features beautiful local artwork, spa services, a library with two-person day beds, a pool located on the edge of the rice fields, a secret hideout near the pool, a tennis court and a gym. It may be a splurge, but Amanjiwo is more than just a place to stay. It's an experience.

With wonderful sunrise views of Borobudur, and a beautiful mountain setting, Plataran Borobudur Resort is a rustic boutique hotel with individual villas and cabanas scattered around a property that overlooks farmlands.

In contrast to the rustic, local Javanese-style accommodations, the restaurant at Plataran is colonial in decor. Surprisingly, the combination of these two styles works together quite nicely. The restaurant has a more formal indoor area, as well as an outdoor terrace. There's a spa and yoga club, an organic garden and mushroom house, a mini-zoo and a children's playground. Plataran has a very nice feel about it and is a good choice for anyone who wants amenities, without the higher price of Amanjiwo.

Plataran accommodation categories:

  • Paddy cabana
  • Grand garden villa

Located right next to Borobudur, guests staying at Manohara can walk to the temple complex in a matter of minutes. Manohara is a moderate property with nice grounds and basic accommodations, though some of the newly renovated rooms are a step above basic. All the rooms face either the garden or an adjoining rice field. The breakfasts at Manohara are simple and if you're looking for amenities and a fine dining experience, Manohara is not for you. But, if you want inexpensive accommodations, in a prime location, this property is definitely worth considering.
